Experts from retirement talk of a senior IT manager

Hi..Today evening,,got an opportunity to hear some tips from a senior IT manager who had worked for 29 years in IT projects..He shared few things he says often he shares with his son who is also now in IT to bear in mind:

  1. Accept the facts that requirements in an IT projects will definitely change..so fundamental acceptance of this fact by you/your team will help one to deal things better.He suggested to take effort and have customer accept the fact.He broadly advocated the agile delivery paradigm..and encouraged to actively get the buy-in to deliver in iteration-1 current understanding of requirements and then in subsequent iterations..the next set of requirements..i.e have the mechanism in place like agile delivery advocates and work in sprints..so that if a new set of requirements are available..the next sprint can handle it.Always keep Customer as your first responsibility.
  2. Have the humility to accept mistakes..as the option of hiding it is just temporary and has greater adverse impacts.
  3. Use the To Do List...Earlier it was culture to carry pen and small notepad..but advent of electronic gadgets/PDA its more techy..He still preferred the old way.
  4. Have some mechanism for self reminders...He followed a small paper of to do items in shirt pocket that could be used often..
  5. Respect humans...they are GODs beautiful creations.. Esp in Team Management ..this simple rule will foster trust and people go that extra mile when needed.Humility is a trait..all should strive to have.
  6. Be eager to Learn.. He was open to learn anything from anyone who knew...Having seen punch cards to cloud & mobile computing..its must for anyone in IT.
  7. Attitude to excel in whatever you do...Even if a task is mundane or monotonous there is always an opportunity to do it better.
  8. Accept varied projects and Be keen to take up challenging assignments..even if it may be outside of your comfortable zone.
  9. Focused Thinking... If a problem is there..if you think more on it..you can solve it...Think through...don't give up..if you give up thinking..its end...Please continue to Think..with new challenges and changes in Technology..There is huge opportunity for you to think...innovate and provide solution.
  10. Attention to Detail..Be Meticulous in all your deliverable s..it should carry your signature..
